Article/ Xiong Yuanyi

Although Wang Xinlun’s paintings Skyscrapers Arising From The Ground, Fellow Countrymen, Railway To My Hometown, Spring Landscape of Yao People’s Home and Ridge Of Yao Mountains all reflect the living conditions of contemporary underclass people in China, they are still  magnificent and stirring. In global development history of art, the underclass people seem no connection with nobleness. However, Wang Xinlun is not confined to such aesthetic convention in Chinese figure painting. He seeks for vigorous and magnificent painting style while endeavoring to explore the living conditions of contemporary underclass people in China and has achieved remarkable success.

During the period of social transition in China today, Wang Xinlun is trying change the delicate and aesthetic painting style which have been dominating contemporary art circle for a long time. They have a strong desire to communicate with outside world and expand their activity circle.  Therefore, the social progress of and development of contemporary China is much refracted on these people. As a matter of fact, it is the class of people who are creating contemporary Chinese history. As depicted in Railway To My Hometown, the ethnic minority people of China are not panic or fear but excited and delightful while opening their world. They really feel the close relation between the social progress of contemporary China and their own development. They feel the actual progress and see their bright future during in such  development. They are genuinely delightful. Wang Xinlun does not only see the ups and downs of a very few people, but concerns much about the development and happiness of the vast majority who live at the bottom edge of Chinese society. His art realm becomes more and more broad.

In Chinese art development history, Chinese painting is usually no more than an entertainment of literati, thus lack of strength. Wang Xinlun does not drift with the flow but endeavors to change such conventional style. In techniques of expression, Wang abandons complicate variations and pursues simplicity and brightness. He enhances the heavy, powerful and moist effect of the appearance of the painting with rough strokes. Besides, he absorbs some techniques in western oil painting to intensify the expressiveness of strokes as well as shaping force in Chinese painting.

In art creation, Wang is not making efforts to explore the dark and bitter inner world of some nobodies at the bottom of the society but exerts efforts to present the yearning and hope of the primary class of people to create a better life. He especially stresses the depiction of the group instead of individuals to present the great power of contemporary underclass people in China in creating the history.

In Wang Xinlun’s painting, these underclass people are much more than signs of the era or representatives of their class; they are real beings with distinct personalities and rich emotions. These underclass “nobodies” are not complacent at all but yearn for communication and development. They are full of vitality and impetus to create. Wang Xinlun is often moved by the positive conditions of these people as he goes deep into their life.

Wang Xinlun:Nomad Influences

The real cultural self-consciousness of a great nation stresses the control of the direction of its own national cultural development in the development of human civilization, not only to overcome its own limitation while integrating into the human civilization but also to promote the development of its own national culture to make unique contributions for the development of human civilization. Wang Xinlun’s pursuit for vigorous and magnificent painting style manifests high cultural self-consciousness and adapts to the independent creation of contemporary Chinese Culture very well.
